The First Football Game Monument

Rutgers University
New Brunswick, NJ
8’ bronze

The First Football Game monument was commissioned to commemorate the first intercollegiate football game ever played. The game was played in 1869 between Rutgers, who won, and Princeton at Rutgers University. The bronze sculpture was erected at Rutgers in 1997.

Rutgers now has a tradition called the Scarlet Walk, where the players walk past the statue and touch it on their way into the stadium for each home game.
