Emancipation and Freedom bronze monument by Jay Warren

The Emancipation and Freedom Monument

Richmond, VA

Freedom, the man whose shackles fall from his wrists in this bronze monument, stands 12 feet tall. The woman on the pedestal behind him cradles an infant in her arms and holds up a document with a date: January 1, 1863, the date of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Bronze plates on the pedestal with portraits in relief memorialize Virginians who fought against slavery and for equality.
